Description
Los peces en el rio is a popular Spanish carol in Spain and Latin America. The title translation is “the little fishes in the river” and refers to the little fishes being excited “to see God born,” as are the birds in the air and the roses in bloom. The lyrics are delightful and are available online. This setting begins with the calm, simple Los peces melody which quickly becomes excited and rhythmic. The Fum melody is soon introduced and eventually the two tunes are brilliantly joined into an exciting finale. Techniques are Ring, mallets and TD with a few marts included for good measure. This is a ‘must-have’ for your ensemble!
Partial Los peces lyrics translation: Fum translation – partial lyrics:
The Virgin is combing her hair On the twenty-fifth of December
between curtain and curtain. Fum, Fum, Fum. A little baby was born.
Her hairs are of gold Blond and pale, son of Virgin Mary
and the comb of fine silver. Was born in a cowshed, fum, fum fum.
Chorus: But look at how the fishes On the twenty-fifth of December
in the river drink. Fum, fum, fum
But look how they drink Is Christmas day
in order to see God born. Very important
They drink and they drink When morning mass is over
and they return to drink, We’ll eat very nice food
the fishes in the river, Fum fum fum.
to see God being born
